Art Basel 39

Retard Riot zines will be shown in Hall 1. They will be for sale courtesy of Printed Matter. The exhibition is open to the general public Wednesday, June 4 to Sunday, June 8, 20008. Daily from 11 am to 7 pm. Also representing Noah Lyon at Art Basel 39 will be Brändström & Stene. Art 39 Basel takes place June 4 – 8, 2008.

The world’s premier international art show for Modern and contemporary works, Art Basel features nearly 300 leading galleries from North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa. More than 2,000 artists, ranging from the great masters of Modern art to the latest generation of emerging stars, are represented in the show’s multiple sections. The exhibition includes the highest-quality paintings, sculptures, drawings, installations, photographs, video and editioned works.

55,000 people attended Art 38 Basel, the last edition of this favorite rendezvous for the global artworld, including art collectors, art dealers, artists, curators and other art enthusiasts. The New York Times has called Art Basel the «Olympics of the Art World.» Le Monde named Art Basel «La meilleure foire du monde» («The best fair in the world»), and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung observed «Die beste Kunst ist gerade gut genug» («The best art is barely good enough»).

With its world-class museums, outdoor sculptures, theaters, concert halls, idyllic medieval old town and new buildings by leading architects, Basel ranks as a culture capital, and that cultural richness helps put the Art Basel week on the agenda for art lovers from all over the globe. During Art Basel, a fascinating atmosphere fills this traditional city, as the international art show is reinforced with exhibitions and events all over the region.

Located on the banks of the Rhine, at the border between Switzerland, France and Germany, Basel is easily navigated by foot and trams. Printed Matter is happy to announce its participation in this year’s Art Basel. Printed Matter will have two sales stands this year: one as part of the Artists’ Magazines showcase in the Art Unlimited Sector and another in the Editions Sector of the main gallery building. Artists’ Magazines opens with a preview on Monday, June 02, and the main fair opens with a preview on Tuesday, June 03. Both will run through Sunday, June 07.

Hall 1.0, Artists Books Sector

The Artists’ Magazines exhibition, a collaboration between Printed Matter and JRP|Ringier, will open with a preview on Monday, June 02 and continue through June 07. While many artists have used the magazine (and the press in general) as a site for their work, this event is intended to highlight the specific features of the magazine as an artistic format: its periodicity, its targeting of a particular readership, its easy circulation, its relatively low production costs, and its character as an editorially driven publication.

Since 2005, Art Basel has commissioned Lionel Bovier, an art historian and director of JRP|Ringier, to survey the artists’ book. After an initial overview of artists’ books in the 21st century, an exhibition dedicated to the Small Press Scene of the 1960s and ‘70s, and an exhibition of Artists’ Records, this year Bovier focuses on artists’ magazines.

For the exhibition, Printed Matter has rolled up its sleeves and dug far into its stacks to bring you a wide and quite varied spectrum of artists’ magazines, which will be both on display and for sale. Magazines included are 0 To 9, 4 Taxis, Art-Language, Art-Rite, Assembling, Control, Cover, Décollage, Destroy All Monsters, FILE, The Fox, Fuck You: A Magazine of the Arts, Geiger, Heresies, High Performance, Interfunktionen, Irregulomadaire, Lovely Daze, LTTR, M/E/A/N/I/N/G, Net, New Observations, New Photo, Permanent Food, Public, Public Illumination, Real Life Magazine, Retard Riot, The Situationist Times, Some/Thing, Sondern, Spirale, Tracks, Upfront, Ver, Vile, Wedge, Whitewalls, Zeitschrift für alles, and ZG, among others.

Hall 2.1, Booth L13

Printed Matter and Art Metropole collaborate on a shared stand in the Editions Sector of Art Basel, immediately over the main entrance. Hall 2 opens with a preview on Tuesday, June 03 and runs through Sunday, June 07. Printed Matter features a selection of artists’ books with highlighted titles from Ed Ruscha, Martin Kippenberger, Dieter Roth, and Andy Warhol, among others. Terence Koh’s In the forest of the Milky Ways There Lies My Nose, produced especially for Printed Matter in 2007, will be on view: one copy only of the edition of 8 remains available for purchase. Printed Matter editions available for purchase include works by Josephine Meckseper, Matthew Brannon, and Kiki Smith.

We look forward to seeing you in Basel!
